  The Owl and the Pussycat

The Owl and the Pussycat is my drawing from the weekend and rather than me saying anything at this point I thought it more appropriate to give you the original poem by Edward Lear who is one of my heros!

 

I

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea

    In a beautiful pea green boat,

     They took some honey, and plenty of money,

    Wrapped up in a five pound note.

The Owl looked up to the stars above,

    And sang to a small guitar,

'O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,

      What a beautiful Pussy you are,

  You are,

  You are!

What a beautiful Pussy you are!'

Pussy said to the Owl, 'You elegant fowl!

    How charmingly sweet you sing!

     O let us be married! too long we have tarried:

    But what shall we do for a ring?'

They sailed away, for a year and a day,

    To the land where the Bong-tree grows

And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood

    With a ring at the end of his nose,

His nose,

His nose,

With a ring at the end of his nose.

'Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling

    Your ring?' Said the Piggy, 'I will.'

So they took it away, and were married next day

    By the Turkey who lives on the hill.

They dined on mince, and slices of quince,

    Which they ate with a runcible spoon;

And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,

    They danced by the light of the moon,

     The moon,

     The moon,

The Norman (French Viking) William the Conqueror defeated English Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Above is the iconic Bayeux Tapestry (more embroidery actually) of Harold's defeat. A very important moment in history and a super important moment in the English language - we now have approximately 30, 000 words in the English language that have a French origin as a result.

Lovely Lillian Gish was born in 1893. You may remember an earlier post I did about Lillian and her sister Dorothy. That's Lil on the left and Dot on the right.

One of my favourite American poets e.e.cummings was born on this day in 1894. Here's a terrific poem of his.

'the hours rise up'

the hours rise up putting off stars and it is

dawn

into the street of the sky light walks scattering poems

on earth a candle is

extinguished    the city

wakes

with a song upon her

mouth having death in her eyes

and it is dawn

the world

goes forth to murder dreams...

i see the street where strong

Cliff Richard was born on this day in 1940. Cliff Richard was Britain's answer to Elvis - well an attempt at it anyway...

On this day in 1947 Chuck Yeager was the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound in his Bell X-1. I've always had a thing for Chuck ever since I read Tom Wolfe's  The Right Stuff. Chuck was the real hero of the whole space race in my opinion...

Lots of other cool stuff happened today too...Roger Moore for example was born in 1927, Dwight D Eisenhower was born in 1890 and so was Isaac Mizrahi in 1961.

...and it is also my birthday today too!! Yippeee! 

Ode to Autumn

Ode to Autumn by John Keats

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness!

Yesterday, Sunday, my boyfriend and I went for a walk through the gardens and bush surrounding the Eastern suburbs here in Sydney. I can't tell you what a glorious day it was! I couldn't stop thinking of Keats' "Ode to Autumn" as I was walking along. Apparently he wrote a letter to a friend after taking a Sunday walk in September of 1819 and said how lovely Autumn was and how much more he preferred it was to "chilly" Spring. This Sunday walk inspired "Ode to Autumn".
