These photos are from top: The northern lights as seen through the ash that exploded into the atmosphere at the beginning of the year from that volcano in Iceland, hay bales along a beach in the Gulf of Mexico absorbing the oil from the BP oil spill, twin girls in Ireland after their first communion, champions Spain at the end of The World Cup.
With only a few days left of the year 2010 most newspapers and websites are doing round ups for the year that was. I've seen a few, and for my money you can't go past The Guardian.

The Guardian is my favorite online news page. They always have the best photos. The shot of the sunbathers on the oily beach is pretty powerful. The gulf coast is one of my favorite places in our big country, and I expect one day I'll move to a Gulf coast town. The tiny island in Florida where we got married (part of a National seashore) was quite lucky that the oil did not come ashore. Unfortunately tourists still canceled vacations and the town has was dealt a crushing financial blow.
It's quite sad, but other than those living on the coast who are still struggling from the aftermath of the spill, it seems that most people in the U.S. have forgotten about the environmental and financial toll that will take many, many years to recover from. Thank you for remembering and for posting this. Truly, it brings tears to my eyes to see that elsewhere people do remember.
